The public is invited to enjoy birthday cake and children’s crafts at the Grassy Waters Preserve South Side Nature Center back deck, to celebrate the Everglades and the 123rd birthday of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, author of, The Everglades: River of Grass. Published in 1947 by the diminutive journalist and ardent Everglades supporter, and reprinted over 11 times, it is the Everglades bible.
The Everglades is one of the largest wetlands in the world and provides water supplies to one in three Floridians. In 2012, the Florida legislature established the birthday of Marjorie Stoneman Douglas as an Everglades Celebration.
Sponsored by the Loxahatchee Group of the Sierra Club, the Everglades Law Center, 1000 Friends of Florida and the Audubon Society of the Everglades, the party begins at 10:00am to 3 pm. Other activities at the preserve include a “Newbie Canoe” beginner’s canoe trip from 9:30-11am and the Nature Center and trails will be open.
