The Florida Humanities Council is funding the third year of a lecture series sponsored by The Delray Beach Historical Society.  The second lecture is John James Audubon’s Travels in America and will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 6:30 pm.  Professor George Frein is the speaker.

The Delray Beach Public Library, 100 W. Atlantic Avenue, is the site of the lecture series.

Dr. Frein is an experienced portrayer, in costume and in character, of historical personalities.  He is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Dakota, Director of the National Chautauqua Tour and is the Artistic Director of the Greenville, S.C. Chautauqua Society.  In his Delray Beach lecture Frein will explore Audubon’s travels to Florida.

The Historical Society’s goal is to offer a variety of spirited topics in order to reach new people in town who want to learn more about Florida history so that they can grow roots to their adopted state as well as to inspire established residents who know and love Florida and want to learn more.

The lectures are free and funding for these programs is provided through a Partnership Grant from the Florida Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Florida Humanities Council is dedicated to fostering community and a sense of place in Florida by providing lifelong education programs that explore Florida’s history, literary and artistic traditions, cultural values and ethics.  The Florida Humanities Council believes that thoughtful discussion and critical thinking are essential to the survival of a thriving democracy.
