Please see this important editorial from Eric Buermann, former chairman of the South Florida Water Management District, in The Palm Beach Post:
The district’s 2016 budget request seeks only half of what it received in 2007, my first year as its chairman. Over the past eight years, its very dedicated staff members have absorbed the duties of 200 eliminated positions — in most cases with no salary increase.
Yet once again, the Legislature slashed the district’s request by morethan $50 million, further straining a budget that already uses its “rainy day” funds for a third of its operating expenses. The district is now on financial life support and will deplete these reserves by 2018.
Unless Governing Board members show serious leadership this month and restore ad valorem funding, Gov. Rick Scott’s 20-year plan for the Everglades will be dead, and our water supply will be at risk — not to mention preparations for sea-level rise.
