STA 1 East

October 19 @ 7:50 am - 11:50 am

Bob Hartman will serve as our field guide as we navigate this STA. Will the Smooth Billed Anis or the Ruff make an appearance?

Field Guide: Bob Hartman

Through a partnership with Audubon Everglades and the South Florida Water Management District, we are offering an escorted birding trip to Stormwater Treatment Area 1E (STA 1E), located off Flying Cow Road. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore Florida’s native wildlife and observe summer birds in this expansive 6,562-acre stormwater treatment area.

Event Details:

  • Location: STA 1E, Flying Cow Road
  • Field Guide: Bob Hartman

Please Note:

  • Construction Alert: STA 1E is currently undergoing construction, so please be mindful of any changes in the area.
  • No Restrooms: There are no bathrooms or porta-potties at STA 1E. The closest facilities are at a strip mall at B Road and Southern Blvd, where you’ll find a 7-Eleven (15589 Southern Blvd) and Dunkin’ Donuts (15689 Southern Blvd).

Carpooling Information: To minimize the number of vehicles on the berm, carpooling is required. If you have fewer than four people in your vehicle, please be prepared to take additional participants or join another car that has open seats.

New Registration Process: We’re trying something new to make the event smoother for everyone. Please follow these steps when registering:

  • Car Registration: If you have a group of four people you plan to carpool with, please register together as one car. Select the option for a full car during registration.
  • Available Seats: If you don’t have a full car, please register in any available car that has open seats. This ensures we maximize carpooling and reduce the number of vehicles on the berm.

Liability Release: Every participant must print, sign, and bring the South Florida Water Management District Liability Release form, including your address. This form is mandatory to attend the event.

Timeliness: Please make every effort to arrive on time. Allow for traffic and possible GPS misdirections. Once the gates are closed and locked, they cannot be reopened.

Communication: Radios will be provided for communication during the event.

Safety Precautions: This is a Stormwater Treatment Area, so be cautious of potential hazards such as alligators, fire ants, sharp drop-offs, and other wildlife. Please watch your step when exiting the vehicle.

eBird List: There will be a shared eBird list for this trip. To access the list, you will need an eBird account with a user ID and password. You can also edit the list to add or remove species. Learn more at eBird.

Photography: We encourage you to capture the beauty and excitement of our birding adventures. By signing the AE consent, you agree to having your photo taken and used on our social media pages. If you prefer your photos not to be shared, please notify us in advance.

Cancellation Policy: If you need to cancel your registration, please do so as soon as possible to allow others on the waitlist to join. If you encounter issues canceling, please contact fieldtrips@auduboneverglades.org.

We appreciate your cooperation with this new registration process and look forward to a fantastic birding experience at STA 1E!
