Join expert birder and Avian ecologist Mike Baranski as we navigate this Wildlife Management Area (WMA)

Expert birder and Avian Biologist Mike Baranski will be serving as the field guide for this stunning Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Mike boasts the title of the top eBirder for this WMA, having identified an impressive total of 148 species.

Situated in Florida, the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area spans 60,348 acres of protected land. Located east of Lake Okeechobee and 25 miles northwest of West Palm Beach, it stands as a prominent fixture along the Ocean to Lake Trail and the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Under the stewardship of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), this site preserves a rich array of flora and fauna, ensuring its natural splendor for future generations to appreciate.

Trip Details:

  • Registration is Mandatory: Please register in advance; walk-ins will not be accepted.
  • Limited Group Size: To ensure a personalized experience, we limit the group size.
  • Vehicle Sharing: Please RSVP your vehicle full of attendees as one 1 ticket. Example: Mary Young & Scott Zucker are riding together, register 1. If you are an individual or group that needs to be placed in a car, Paula Gatrell our Field Trip leader will help place you in one. If you are an individual that would like to drive, please contact Paula and she will help place people in your car.
  • Punctuality Matters: Please make every effort to be on time. Allow for traffic and GPS misdirection’s.
  • Cancellation Policy: If you cannot attend, kindly cancel your ticket to allow others to participate. You can cancel your tickets on Eventbrite. For assistance, please contact Paula, the Field Trip Coordinator, at Paula@Auduboneverglades.org.
  • Meeting Point: SOUTH entrance, located behind the check-in station. A log home on the left-hand side serves as a meeting point with parking available behind it.
  • Fees: $3.00 per person or $6.00 per vehicle, unless you possess a senior pass. Upon entry, look for a yellow box with envelopes for payment. Admission to the WMA is self-check-in; validation must be displayed on the driver’s side window dashboard.
  • Caution: Three low water crossings; not suitable for low-riding vehicles. The route may be rough as grades have not been graded.
  • Caravan Route: South Grade -> Boardwalk -> Stumpers Grade -> Tomato Grade. Stops at campsites for late migrant bird sightings. Route subject to guide’s discretion.
  • Essentials to Bring: Bug spray, hydration, sun and wind protection, and lunch or snacks.
  • Wildlife Alert: Expect encounters with alligators, fire ants, raccoons, snakes, possums, and if fortunate, the resident bobcat.
  • Portable Restrooms: Port-a-potties are available at various campsites along our journey. Please Note: The timing for Porta-a- potty removal post-small game season is uncertain.
