December’s bird of the month is the subject of our presentation at the general membership meeting. Dr. Richard Raid will tell us all about the Barn Owls of the Everglades Agricultural Area. You can participate as well: bring your own pictures to display during the meeting. Continue to help choose a bird of the month by sending me emails at hlinda@aol.com or calling me at 561-742-7791. Any comments are greatly appreciated.
Barn Owl (Tyto alba), according to the Cornell Lab, is one of the most widespread of all owls; it is nearly cosmopolitan (found worldwide). The North American form, one of 46 different races described worldwide, is larger than all others. Like many raptors, females are larger than males, which allows them to feed on different prey items, effectively partitioning the resources of their territory.
We all look forward to hearing more about the Barn Owls (and perhaps other birds) of the EAA at this month’s meeting.
