May Bird of the Month – Glossy Ibis
From Ben Kolstad’s article in the May-June Kite: “May’s bird of the month is the darker version of last month’s bird, although it’s in a different genus from the white; Glossy Ibis is Plegadis falcinellus, while white is Eudocimus albus. If you’re out at the refuge in the evening, it’s not hard to imagine the skies literally darkening as flocks of glossy and white ibis stream by on their way to their roosting sights. Glossies are about two feet tall, their bills curve down, and they have long legs, perfect for wading.”
Come to our May meeting to hear our own bird expert, Clive Pinnock, tell us more about these characteristic (and charismatic) south Florida birds.”
(Photographer’s please note that next month’s June 2014 Bird will be the Roseate Spoonbill)
